Choosing Dog Breeds for a Family Life

Pomeranians  |  Newfoundlands  |  Pit Bulls  |  Boxers  |  Eskimo Dogs

Choosing dog breeds for a family with children can be an important decision. Experience raising dogs will be a great help no matter what kind of dog is purchased. If a family goes to the local Humane Society to purchase their pet, questions to ask are the dogs' temperament around children, whether it is happier indoors or out, and the approximate age of the animal. Even when choosing dog breeds that are registered or pure breeds, ask the same questions and more.

A family is going to want a dog that will be good with children and have the ability to defend their home if necessary. Choosing dog breeds that fit into this criterion requires research and interviewing of the breeders. An owner with a medium sized yard, who is comfortable raising dogs, and has children over six years of age, might look to purchase an American Bulldog, a Canadian Eskimo Dog, or a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. These are all intelligent, strong animals that are very loyal to their families. Local temperature averages is also a consideration when a family is choosing a dog breed. A dog like the American Bulldog has short hair and fares better in warmer temperatures. A Canadian Eskimo Dog is more suited for snow and colder temperatures with their thick coats. A Chesapeake Bay Retriever is suited for warm to cold temperatures and balances well in a variety of seasons.

Lastly, a family will want to research common health problems when choosing dog breeds. Many pure breed dogs have a history of common health problems that need to be considered. The American Bulldog is prone to hip dysplasia. The Canadian Eskimo Dog is usually very healthy. A Chesapeake Bay Retriever is prone to both eye problems and hip dysplasia. Pet insurance is available in some areas, but if a family wants to have many years enjoying their pet, they need to consider future health problems with their furry friend when choosing a dog breed.
