On Choosing A Dog Breed

Pomeranians  |  Newfoundlands  |  Pit Bulls  |  Boxers  |  Eskimo Dogs

When it comes to the subject of choosing a dog breed people could find themselves somewhat perplexed. This is not because they are unsure of choosing a dog breed, but mainly because they are confronted with having to choose from so many beautiful dogs that selecting a specific breed can be quite difficult. But, ultimately, they will have to make that choice at one point or another. So how does a person go about choosing a dog breed?

First, the person needs to decide on how much space will be allocated to the dog and what kind of dog would be a suitable fit for the dwelling it will inhabit. If one lives in a small studio apartment in Greenwich Village or Berkeley (where studios are really, really small), it would not be wise to select a Great Dane as your new roommate. And, while there is nothing wrong about purchasing a Chihuahua if you live on a 400 acre ranch, that really is a lot of space that the dog doesn’t need. So, when choosing a dog breed it is of paramount importance to make sure the dog has adequate space or else it will be an exercise in cruelty.

Second, it is wise when choosing a dog to select one that you will feel comfortable with. Some people feel uneasy about dogs that may have an aggressive reputation. Others like a dog that is known for its relative cuteness factor. Basically, when choosing a dog breed, a person needs to look beyond fads or other such surface value decisions and pick the type of dog that one might feel fits their personality the best.

Thirdly, when choosing a particular animal from the dog breed, one shouldn't over analyze which specific dog within the dog breed that you wish to purchase. Choosing a dog breed should never end up with you being in the very uncomfortable situation of being caught in the trap of paralysis by analysis.

This simply turns the exercise of choosing a dog breed into an exercise in never actually choosing anything and just looping the decision around in your mind forever. Make a pick and bring that doggie home.
